One of the most interesting things that Nigeria is learning during this COVID-19 pandemic era is the amazing leadership qualities of some committed public office holders and health care practitioners, in their quest to provide palliatives to cushion the economic challenges and provide better public health care services in the fight against the dreaded virus ravaging the world. In managing COVID-19 challenges in Ogun West Senatorial District of Ogun State, the Senator representing the District, Sen. Tolu Odebiyi in his usual characteristics and resting on the words of Byron Pulsifer “To make any kind of change, one has to have the will and determination to do it”, on the 1st of April, 2020 rolled out his palliatives in view of the measures already taken to further stem COVID-19 incursion in Ogun State and to ameliorate the negative effects of thIs global phenomenon with particular focus on his Ogun West Senatorial District.

The Senator’s swift intervention came in two folds. The Prevention and the Provision of Sustenance Support.

As part of this intervention template, Sen. Odebiyi sponsored various public enlightenment programmes on radio and Television on how to safeguard the people from contracting COVID-19 and the distribution of alcohol based hand sanitizers across the communities.

An intervention which included a commitment of N10m to Ogun State Government in his effort to ameliorate problems associated with the pandemic in Ogun West Senatorial District, was widely lauded by the people in his constituency and health professionals leading the fight against the disease in the State.

Similarly, the Senator made available over ten thousand packaged food items to his people in Ogun West with cash gifts of N2,500 each to 500 indigent persons of Ogun West as part of his efforts to provide succour and ameliorate the needs of his people at a very critical period.

Over the last one year, his relationship with his Constituents has been on top of his priorities.

Thus, as a Senator who is determined to be accessible to his people opened (4) four constituency offices across the (5) five Local Government Areas that make up the Senatorial District. The constituency office for the people of Iboro is located beside Rec Majiyagbe House, Iboro, for the people in Ota, the office is located at Alhaji Yusuff Adegbemiro Shopping Complex, Plaza Junction, Sango-Ota. For Ilaro, it’s at Aburo Estate, Opposite Orona High School, Oke Ela, Ilaro, While Ipokia people need to go to Ayedun Quarters, opposite Kara, Border Road, Idiroko to discuss matters of concern, if the need arises.

According to the Ogun West Senator, he said, “The constituency offices are for the use of our people. We opened them to engage some of our young people who are unemployed. We employed people there who are drawing salary.

It is also meant for our people who will be looking for me for one assistance or the other”.

Futhermore, good number of employable youth from Ogun West, who submitted their credentials have been gainfully employed into Federal Capital Territory Authority (FCTA) in Abuja as well as in other various Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) through the efforts of the Senator who is also the Vice Chairman Senate Committee on Federal Capital Territory.

Towards fulfilling his promises to touch as many lives as possible, the Senator facilitated poverty alleviation and skill acquisition programmes for market women and youth in the Senatorial District.

It takes a visionary leader to envisage the future and plan for it. It was based on this principle that Sen. Odebiyi facilitated the Information Technology training with cash gifts given out to 150 people in Ipokia, Ayetoro and Iju to enhance human capital development and promote E-learning in Ogun West Senatorial District.

Determined to make life more meaningful for the people of his Senatorial District, Sen. Odebiyi facilitated the Installation of 2 Transformers at Destiny Estate in Ado-Odo-Ota and Ilujoda in Iboro.

Sen. Odebiyi will continue to harvest tangible democratic dividends. One of the dividends is the Construction of 2 blocks of classrooms with office and stores at Holy Trinity Primary school in Iboro.

He assures that more of these and other poverty alleviation empowerment programmes are on the way for the people of his constituency.

His primary purpose of going to National Assembly is to make laws that will better the lots of the greatest number of his people, promote their economic well-being and social status and attract developmental projects. And through strong legislative framework and his commitment to good governance, the Ogun West Senator has included so many projects to be cited in Ogun West, in the 2020 national budget. By the grace of the almighty God some of these projects will surely be delivered for the use of the good people of Ogun West Senatorial District.

With his political will, determination and vision to make things happen, Sen. Odebiyi has moved several motions and sponsored many Bills touching on the Establishment Of The National Institute Of Border Management Studies Imeko, (this institution will be the first in Africa), The Establishment Of The Chartered Institute Of Administrators And Registrars Of Nigerian Universities and The National Youth Service Scheme Amendment Act 2019 and many others have scaled first reading.

As part of his unwavering efforts to put an end to the excessiveness of the officers and men of Nigeria Customs Ogun Command, the Senator raised several motions of Urgent National Importance to investigate and address the continuous killings of residents of border towns in Ogun West and also requested that the Nigeria Customs Service compensates the affected families adequately.

Also, as part of his desire to assist academically gifted but economically disadvantaged students in Ogun West under his multi faceted approach to education offered Scholarship until graduation, to fifty four (54) Ogun West students in various higher institutions in Nigeria.

The undergraduate Students are fascinated by the Senator’s decision to fund their education and they have not hidden their love and appreciation for the remarkable performance and exceptional leadership style of the Senator.

The Senator would like to show his sincere appreciation for the support he has enjoyed in the last one year as these highlights wouldn’t have been possible without the support and concerted effort of all.
