Following the expiration of the first tenure of Mahmood Yakubu as the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Ahmed Mu’azu, has been appointed as the acting chairman of the commission.
Mu’azu who is a national commissioner of INEC will be serving as the commission’s chairman pending the time the Senate confirms the re-appointment of Yakubu as the chairman of the electoral commission.
Making the development known while speaking at the commission’s headquarter’s on Monday, Yakubu explained that the Mu’azu was selected by the commission to take up the role of the acting chairman of the commission pending the time his appointment will be confirmed.
Speaking at the INEC headquarters in Abuja on Monday, Yakubu said the national commissioners agreed that Mu’azu will take over as the acting chairman pending the confirmation.
“Pending the conclusion of the statutory process, the remaining national commissioners have resolved that AVM Ahmed Mu’azu (rtd) will oversee the affairs of the Commission.
“It is therefore my pleasure to hand over to him in the interim. We have worked as a team for the last four years. Therefore, there is nothing new to anyone of them,” Yakubu said.
It will be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari had in October nominated Yakubu for re-appointment as the chairman of INEC.
However, the Senate is yet to confirm the appointment of Yakubu as the chairman of the commission.
