A Rivers State Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Port Harcourt has remanded a 36-year-old man, identified simply as Ibuchi, in police custody pending the conclusion of investigation into the case of attempted murder and rape against him.
Ibuchi is facing five counts bordering on attempted murder and rape.
It was learnt that the suspect conspired with his wife, Gift Ibuchi, to carry out the act against one Justice Atisi, a mother of five at Omuihuechi, Aluu community, Ikwerre Local Government Area of the state.
It was gathered that the victim was a close friend of the suspect’s wife, who invited her to their house on the pretext that she was ill.
After the victim honoured her friend’s invitation and rushed to her house to check on her, the suspect allegedly spiked the soft drink that was offered to her and minutes after taking the drink, she lost consciousness.
According to the testimony of the victim, she regained consciousness and saw the accused struggling to rape her and inserting his fingers into her private parts, and when she tried to shout, he allegedly covered her mouth with a bed sheet.
Gift, who was to be arraigned alongside her husband on two counts of aiding and abetting attempted murder and rape, could not be charged as she disappeared from the court premises.
The counsel for Gift, Esu Nte, faulted the charges, stating that they were fictitious and that the plaintiff’s statement of oath did not indicate the date the incident took place.
Chief Magistrate Felicita Amanze remanded Ibuchi in police custody and ordered for full investigation, the report of which should be tendered on the next adjourned date, September 15, 2020.
